Gonks are a kind of soft toy. These toys were popular with children between the 1960s and the 1980s. It is thought that this kind of soft toy actually dates back decades further in the past and was popular in war time as they could easily be sewn or knitted from materials that could be found in the home.

Most mass produced gonks were made of soft materials such as fur. They were usually made up of a large body with a face added to it which was often funny. Gonks generally did not come with arms or legs and would often stand up on their flat base. Some gonks, however, did have arms and legs of some form.

Gonks used to come in all shapes and sizes. They could be purchased in toy and other shops and were often a popular prize in fairground games and attractions. It was also quite common for parents and children to make up their own gonks and in the 1960s people could also buy a lot of gonk related clothing and accessories.

Gonks do still exist in various forms but are not as popular as they were in the past as toys although they can still be seen in many fairgrounds as prizes. Nowadays, however, most gonks are sold as corporate marketing giveaways and promotional items.
